Bromeliad Society/Houston

We want everyone to know and love bromeliads as much as we do and learn as much as you may desire about them!

Our monthly meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of the month, 7:30 p.m. at the Hermann Park Garden Center by the rose garden. (EXCEPT in June and in December, we have a special holiday meeting/party and rare plant auction...not to be missed! Just remember to always check your bulletin for any meeting changes.) As a member, you will receive the monthly Bulletin prior to each meeting. A yearbook is published annually and is distributed after February of each year.

First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Houston

Welcome to First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Houston, Texas. This historic Church, originally founded in 1851 across from what is now Jones Hall has become an institution in the Midtown area, right across the street from Houston Community College Central Campus. The present church building, erected in 1927, has been honored by architects as a perfect example of Lombard Romanesque style of architecture. On any warm spring afternoon you are liable to spot college students relaxing on the beautiful front lawn, the front steps of the sanctuary, or in the gazebo.

On Sunday mornings, we invite you to come visit at our 11 AM service. There, you’ll hear wonderful music in the Lutheran tradition, meet friendly parish members, and listen to the inspiring, thoughtful and comforting sermons from Pastor Edwin D. Peterman.  Pastor Peterman, pastor emeritus from Christ the King Lutheran Church, eschewed the trappings of retirement to come lead this congregation during its period of renewal in the Evangelical Lutheran tradition. In doing so, he draws upon a lifetime of devotion to God’s will—as a civil rights marcher in the 60’s and as a pioneer of ministry to Aids patients and their families in the 80’s. Click the nearby link for more info on Pastor Peterman. Come at 10 AM for his adult Sunday Church School.

Houston Botanic Garden

To establish and sustain a premier botanic garden that stimulates the appreciation of natural beauty and interest in plants and gardening through education, conservation, and scientific inquiry.

Jerry's Jungle

Before retiring, Fern and I visited many world class gardens enhancing our enthusiasm for creating a very different type of garden at our home in Houston. Today the garden represents nearly 23 years of collecting and propagating rare and unusual plant varieties you will not find at your local nurseries.

Marcelle Sheppard Crinum Site Marcelle's Crinums

Marcelle Sheppard is a talented plant grower and plant breeder.   This Web site describes her 50+ years of work with Crinum and documents her contributions.  Additionally, plants she's found or received over the years are described with notes (where possible) about where they came from, who created them, etc.  Marcelle is a source of knowledge and information for us as we continue to learn about Crinum, especially garden plants and hybrids derived from African and American species.

NeoTropicals

Although gardening is a hobby, I usually do something with it every day. My garden is not the formal vegetable garden or well tended residential landscape but rather a collection of interesting plants I just enjoy growing and living around. There are palms, giant clumping bamboo, jungle rainforest plants like bromeliads, tree growing cactus, orchids, and ferns.
